  8. SecondChance runs on Windows 9x and Windows Me systems with at least 
  9. 20 MB free disk space and 16 MB of RAM.  After installation 
  10. is complete, start SecondChance and open the Help file. Please take 
  11. a few minutes to read through the Help file to familiarize yourself 
  12. with the operation and feature set of SecondChance.

  27. 1.  Manual Checkpoint Restoration
  28. ---------------------------------
  29. If you lose your SecondChance emergency boot disk and you need to 
  30. restore your computer to an earlier Checkpoint, do the following:
  31. Boot the computer with your Windows startup diskette.  At the C: 
  32. prompt, change to the C:\PQSC\PROGRAM directory, type CRESTORE, and
  33. press <Enter>.  The SecondChance DOS restore dialog will appear on 
  34. your screen, and you can select a Checkpoint to restore.
  35.  
  36. If you experience a power outage or some other system failure that
  37. interrupts the Checkpoint restoration, SecondChance will attempt to
  38. continue with the restore when you reboot your system.  If you cannot
  39. restore your system and SecondChance keeps starting when you boot your
  40. system, boot your system to 'Safe mode command prompt only.' (See the
  41. section entitled "Bypassing your startup files" in the Windows 95
  42. manual, or "Using a startup disk" in the Windows 98 manual.)  At the
  43. C: prompt, change to the C:\PQSC\PROGRAM directory, delete the
  44. CRESTORE.CMD file, and reboot your system.

  47. 2.  DOS Mode
  48. ------------
  49. SecondChance will not detect changes made while in DOS mode, such
  50. as deleting or modifying a file.  Because of this, changes made in
  51. DOS mode cannot be restored. 
  52.  
  53. If SecondChance has been loaded, it will detect and restore files/folders
  54. that have been modified or deleted while Windows is running.  Changes
  55. made in a Windows DOS box will be detected and recorded by SecondChance.

  58. 3.  Windows System Folder
  59. -------------------------
  60. To restore files back to the Windows folder, restore to a previous
  61. Checkpoint.  Many files in the Windows folder are open; the Viewer 
  62. is unable to restore opened files.

  65. 4.  Drive Limits and Checkpoint Maintenance
  66. -------------------------------------------
  67. If SecondChance reaches the drive limit that has been set, it will prompt
  68. you to delete old Checkpoints. (See "Enable Checkpoint discard 
  69. notification" under the "Manage Checkpoints" topic in the help file.)  
  70. If you disable this function, SecondChance will automatically discard
  71. the Checkpoints when the drive limit has been reached.  It is highly
  72. recommended that you manually maintain your Checkpoint list to avoid 
  73. drive space issues.  If more than one drive is being monitored and one
  74. of the drives reaches its drive limit, Checkpoints are deleted only
  75. from the drive that has reached its limit.  This could cause some 
  76. Checkpoints to become out of sync if there is data dependent on multiple
  77. drives.

  79. In the Options tab, under the Limits feature, the 'Checkpoint Space 
  80. Limit Exception for All Drives' option allows you to override the 
  81. 'Space Limit for Checkpoints' option. (See "Change space limits for 
  82. drives" under the "Manage Checkpoints" topic in the help file.)

  84. Make sure you have enough room for your Checkpoints and your Windows 
  85. swap file.  You should maintain at least 95-100 MB of free space for 
  86. the Windows swap file.  For more information on setting your free space 
  87. limit, see "Change space limits for drives" under the Manage 
  88. Checkpoints topic in the SecondChance help file.

  91. 5.  Removable Media/Floating Drive Letters
  92. ------------------------------------------
  93. Do not monitor removable drives which have been set as fixed disks.
  94. If you have a removable drive in your machine, we recommend changing 
  95. the drive letter to something further down the drive letter chain
  96. (from E: to M:, for example).  SecondChance will boot to a "DOS boot 
  97. mode" when it is restoring a Checkpoint.  Your drive letters may change
  98. when the removable drive is disconnected.  Windows can change the
  99. drive letters of your monitored drives when you add or remove drives
  100. from your system.  SecondChance detects this situation at system startup
  101. by checking the monitored drives to see if any have moved.  If
  102. SecondChance detects changes, it will attempt to see what drive
  103. has moved and where it went, then attempt to roll the drive back.

  106. 6.  Excluding Directories
  107. -------------------------
  108. Once a directory has been added to the Excluded Directory list, no 
  109. changes in that directory will be tracked or restored from that point 
  110. forward.  The exception to this rule is a file that is moved into the 
  111. Excluded Directory from a directory that is not excluded.  This file 
  112. will continue to be tracked in case you want to restore the system to 
  113. a Checkpoint created prior to the directory being excluded, and you 
  114. want the file to go back to its original location.

  116. If you restore to a Checkpoint that was created before the folder
  117. was excluded, any files that were modified or deleted after that
  118. Checkpoint was created but before the folder was excluded will be
  119. restored.

  122. 7.  Miscellaneous
  123. -----------------
  124. 7.1  If you are using the Recycle Bin, SecondChance will show deleted
  125.      files as 'Moved' in the Viewer until you empty the Recycle Bin.
  126.      Once the Recycle Bin has been emptied, the files will appear as
  127.      deleted in the Viewer.  If the Recycle Bin is off, SecondChance
  128.      will keep a copy of the file in the Checkpoint folder when it is
  129.      deleted.

  131. 7.2  SecondChance will not undo partition changes.
  132.  
  133. 7.3  If you are using any kind of imaging software and you want to
  134.      restore a drive's image using something like Drive Image(R), stop 
  135.      monitoring the affected drive before you restore the image.  
  136.      After the image has been successfully restored, add the drive 
  137.      back to the Add/Remove drives list in SecondChance 
  138.      (See "Add drives to Checkpoint monitoring" in the Manage 
  139.      Checkpoints topic in the SecondChance help file.)

  141. 7.4  On multiple boot systems, SecondChance only works when you boot to
  142.      your Windows 95/98 operating system that contains the SecondChance
  143.      software.  If you boot to Windows NT, DOS, Unix, OS/2, Linux,
  144.      BeOS, or any other operating system, SecondChance cannot monitor 
  145.      the changes that occur.

  147. 7.5  Nuts and Bolts Trashguard must be disabled when running SecondChance.
  148.  
  149. 7.6  Do not move the SecondChance directory or program files with any
  150.      kind of application moving utility.
  151.  
  152. 7.7  Running SecondChance with WinOnCD 3.6 or below results in a
  153.      system crash.  However, if you download the patch for WinOnCD
  154.      (version 3.7), there is no conflict with SecondChance.
